2014's Most Anticipated Movies

Anticipation 2014

1. Nymphomaniac

Directed by Lars Von Trier.

  • 2014-02-06 (Uncut version, Berlin Film Festival)
  • ~330 minutes
  • 2.35:1 and 1.85:1
  • English

Notes: Lars Von Trier makes a porno? According to previews of the cut (producer) version, that is an overstatement. The Von Trier 5½ hour version will reveal the truth. Lars is one of my favorite art film directors, and this movie will probably drain me as much as previous efforts have.

2. The Budapest Grand Hotel

Directed by Wes Anderson.

  • 2014-02-06 (Berlin Film Festival)
  • Unspecified running time
  • 2.35:1, 1.85:1 and 1.37:1
  • English

Notes: Wes Anderson is another of my favorite art film directors. This release is highly stylized, and has got a character sheet a mile long. I have yet to be let down by any of Wes’ movies.

3. Godzilla

Directed by Gareth Edwards.

  • 2014-05-16 (USA)
  • Unspecified running time
  • 2.35:1
  • English

Notes: This can be hit and miss. I had to throw one box office movie in the mix, and that Godzilla trailer looks like lots of fun.

4. Sin City: A Dame to kill for

Directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller.

  • 2014-08-22 (USA)
  • Unspecified running time
  • 1.85:1
  • English

Notes: A second installation in Frank Miller’s series of Sin City, long overdue. The first movie captured the style in the books so well, and I expect nothing less in this sequel.

5. Interstellar

Directed by Christopher Nolan.

  • 2014-11-07 (USA)
  • Unspecified running time
  • 2.35:1, 1.44:1 (IMAX)
  • English

Notes: Nolan tends to take popcorn movies to another level. I have enjoyed all of his work to date. What does he have in store for us this time?

Footnote: I’d like to mention the conclusion of The Hobbit-trilogy; There and Back Again. I didn’t include it because it was such an obvious choice for me, I also couldn’t find any (official) poster for it.
